The Edit
Q1 is almost over. What actually earned its place?
What We’re Refining Right Now
Yay for client interactions, business conversations, and client requests because everything has been skewing toward two things lately, and I’m convinced they’re really asking the same question two different ways: How do I do more with less? And what are those special pieces that can skyrocket any look?
Both questions are really about the edit.
Here’s what confirmed it for me: Prada’s FW26 runway used only 15 models: each walking four times, peeling away a layer with every pass. The point was how intentional pieces transform across contexts. One wardrobe. Multiple lives. That’s the whole thesis.
One of Milan’s biggest takeaways this season was less “trend” per se, and more strategy: layering that’s more relaxed, down-to-earth, and reflective of how busy people actually get dressed: less stacking and more about knowing which pieces do the heavy lifting when you need them to.
Which brings me to buying abroad. Some of the most irreplaceable pieces in my clients’ wardrobes, and my own, weren’t found at a mall (do we even go there anymore?!) or in a scroll; they came from being intentional while traveling: seeking out quality over branding, skill over logo. The pieces that earn permanent rotation are often the ones nobody else has.
Q1 closes this month. Before you add anything new, the question worth sitting with is:
What’s already here that deserves more of your attention?
Unsolicited Style Advice
This is a new feature of the weekly Style Blueprint newsletter where I ask a few questions - some will seem obvious, some will sting a little - meant to unlock honest assessment and queue up better decisions. To date, the feedback has been plentiful and gratifying…readers are replying and sharing their answers (and angst)!
A good one for you to consider:
“What’s costing you more: buying cheap or not editing ruthlessly? Most people think the problem is what they’re buying. The real problem is what they’re keeping. A closet full of mediocre options will always cost you more time, money, and mental energy than a small collection of excellent ones.”
When you need clarity, subtract.
What I Bought (And Why)
A gathered-sleeve blazer: The color reads warm, the fit is relaxed but tailored, and I had it customized: denim patches on the underside of the collar and pockets. Because a great piece is one thing. A great piece that’s unmistakably you is another.
A long-sleeve white tee: These need refreshing regularly, and this one earns its place twice: as a layer when it’s still cool (like now), and solo when it’s not. Simple, reliable, done.
A mini triangle scarf: Color, versatility, and the ability to pull together a collection of solids in seconds. It can be worn at least five different ways. One piece, multiple lives… very Milan of me.
A pencil skirt I almost bought: The fit, fabric, and styling were ideal: travel, work, weekends, all covered. But it only came in black, so I’m holding out for navy or camel. Sometimes the edit means waiting. Stay tuned…
The Work Is Expanding
One more thing: Wardrobe Capital is coming…! The book for high performers who spend well on everything except their wardrobe. If March’s theme landed close to home, get on the early access list before it drops.
Glad I could share here, and if you want weekly strategy <decisions, edits, execution>, that now lives inside Style Blueprint on the new platform. If you’d like to stay connected to the ongoing work, you can join us there.
