And if not “change” your style at least make you think about aspects of your style or lack thereof. I stumbled upon it while reading an old issue of Vanity Fair and immediately ordered it. Not that you would have but, I’m a wardrobist so it makes sense - I am always striving to understand various facets of dressing, who wears what, and, frankly, why they wear it.
So, when I saw How Directors Dress, my curiosity was piqued. Let me be clear: what I believe was most significant was seeing what directors wore behind-the-scenes (BTS) and reading why, not down the red carpet because on the set is a more true everyday representation that is more useful for us everyday Janes and Joes.
Read the book or at least get it and look at the 200+ archival photographs to see how the big wigs do it. Just in case, here are a few key takeaways that all of us aspirational fashionistas and dapper dons can make use of:
Most have a “uniform” of sorts. A uniform can be anything from a standard tee + jeans they wear, or that piece they constantly sport like Sofia Coppola and [my favorite] the white button down or WBD.
Most choose higher-end versions of said item(s) because they get worn often and without shame.
Most focus on comfort…as a close second to their go-to items.
Even their red carpet looks draw upon the same reasoning used for their everyday dressing.
Remarkably basic-but-essential lessons to glean folks…
If you love it, buy the best (or nicest version you can afford)
Find a uniform and embrace it
When you confirm your asset (that thing you love or want to highlight), stick with it!
Go forth and be [more] stylish,
xx monica
