Some of the pieces in a capsule collection created for a 50-something partner at a law firm in Denver, CO

Here’s the thing: a capsule collection doesn’t mean you will look like everyone else and it also doesn’t look the same for everyone. Tried-and-true foundational elements are your starting point and provide a starting point to which you add your own zhush, lifestyle, and preferences.

Let me repeat: a capsule collection is a starting point for tried-and-true wardrobe classics!

My 16-year-old deep eggplant-colored, pinstriped blazer is a foundational item for me. I wear it to dress up my stretchy navy pants. I wear it with my black silk Costume National skirt for fancier occasions. It’s also my go-to travel blazer in summer with a black tee. It’s versatile. It fits perfectly. It plays well with black and navy blue. It elevates anything I am wearing. It’s a second-hand item I found on a trip to Paris ages ago. The blazer reminds me of how well things used to be made. It reminds me of the importance of sustainability and giving a second or third life to garments. The blazer travels well.

While I love a blazer, it may not be your thing…yet. You may not find it cool to buy previously worn items or you may have a love for brighter colors. This blazer is part of my capsule collection because it works for my lifestyle, my preferences, and my work. You may find that the layer that is more essential and foundational for you is a long, open knit cardigan but only you can decide that.

Today, my goal is simply to share the 12 principles you should consider when building your capsule collection. Yes – I can make a solid capsule collection list and recommendations for anyone but it’s up to you to take that list of foundational tried-and-true items and knead them to your life and lifestyle.
